Women's Dental Health

Variations in female hormones make it essential for women to pay particular attention to their dental health. Normal changes in estrogen and progesterone levels can create sensitive, tender and even bleeding gums. At these times, it is crucial to take special care of gums and teeth, as the gums are much more sensitive to irritants like plaque and food debris.

Particular periods of hormone change include:

Puberty : The surge of hormones makes the gums tender and sensitive to irritants. Young ladies may also experience ulcers as a result of the hormone surge. Over time however, the gums will become less irritated and less sensitive to irritants.

Menstruation : A woman may experience bleeding gums and increased tenderness right before her period due to increased levels of hormones.
Oral Contraceptives : Contraceptives increase the levels of estrogen and progesterone and often lead to gum tenderness as well.

Pregnancy : During pregnancy, Hormone levels remain elevated resulting in inflamed gums. Women may also experience small growths on the gums known as “pregnancy tumors”, these growths are NOT cancerous and usually go away after pregnancy is over. At these times, food and plaque and easily irritate the gums causing additional inflammation, tenderness and bleeding. During these times, women should floss, to get the irritants out between their teeth. If flossing hurts or is difficult, a water pick is a n alternative but not a replacement to flossing. Women should brush twice a day, an electric toothbrush may be an adjunct for motivation.
